“Nature and History Community” Tour

Las Terrazas Tourist Complex, located exactly in the northeast corner, 2.4 miles north of Km. 51 of the National Highway, just 45 minutes west of Havana, is a good place that invites you to enjoy nature tourism.

The community of Las Terrazas, is located in the Sierra del Rosario, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1985. In Las Terrazas the forests are always green, the rivers and waterfalls are crystal clear. To enter the community is to have the certainty that there really are impressive places.

Area Values

The Community of Las Terrazas is located in the Sierra del Rosario, which is in the category of Protected Areas of the country for its environmental importance, the core areas are located in the heights of the Salon and the Peladas, these are called ecological and natural reserve respectively, according to the categories of management of Protected Areas in Cuba.

It has a variety of geological and plant formations and a wide diversity of natural, historical and cultural resources. We can find presence of fossils between the Upper Jurassic and the middle part of the Lower Cretaceous periods contained in the limestone rocks. The fauna and flora is characterized in first place by vertebrates, the scarcity of mammals and a greater abundance of birds, reptiles and amphibians and invertebrates, as well as its flora has several vegetal formations and existence of mogotes. It has a tropical climate with the characteristics of the reserve. The flora is made up of 889 plant organisms, with 11% endemism. The fauna is highly endemic in particular groups, such as mollusks, which can reach 40%. Amphibians and reptiles exceed 80%.

The Sierra del Rosario has several plant formations: evergreen forests, semideciduous, pine forests, quabales, complex of mogotes and secondary vegetation. Of the fauna, the most studied groups are amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Ninety species of mollusks, 16 species of amphibians, 33 species of reptiles, and 117 species of birds have been reported.

Itinerary

  • Explanation of the Las Terrazas Social Project.
  • Visit to the Community Las Terrazas, walk through the Callejón de La Moka and taste a coffee.
  • Visit to the Buenavista coffee plantation, a 19th century coffee plantation.
  • Visit to the Hotel Moka and lunch in one of the restaurants of the Complex according to availability.
  • Visit to the San Juan River.
