"El Taburete Trail tour", Las Terrazas

Trails are essential options for nature lovers. Walking through evergreen forests with exuberant vegetation and fauna, bordering rivers and waterfalls with crystal-clear waters, listening to the singing of birds in their natural environment make these tours a unique experience that allows you to be in direct contact with nature.

The community of Las Terrazas is located in the Sierra del Rosario, declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1985 being the first one in Cuba, this is one of the ideal places for hiking in our country, so we have designed a series of tours through various trails in this place for your enjoyment.

Sendero El Taburete: Go along this path while you delight with the vegetation and the flora and fauna that you will find during the journey, we propose you a climb to the mountain El Taburete that is located at 452 meters of altitude, the highest point of the journey where there is a monument dedicated to Che Guevara and from this point you can see the south plain of the Province Artemisa up to the Gulf of Batabanó and on the opposite side the Valley of San Juan where the Community Las Terrazas rises. We descend through a narrow road until we reach the San Juan River Baths. Free time for swimming in natural pools. After the visit, we descend through the valley of the San Juan River until we reach Rancho Curujey.

Area values

The Sendero El Taburete: is located in the Sierra del Rosario, which is in the category of Protected Areas of the country for its environmental importance, the core areas are located in the heights of the Salon and the Peladas, these are called ecological and natural reserve respectively, according to the categories of management of Protected Areas in Cuba.

It has a variety of geological and plant formations and a wide diversity of natural, historical and cultural resources. We can find presence of fossils between the Upper Jurassic and the middle part of the Lower Cretaceous periods contained in the limestone rocks. The fauna and flora is characterized in first place by vertebrates, the scarcity of mammals and a greater abundance of birds, reptiles and amphibians and invertebrates, as well as its flora has several vegetal formations and existence of mogotes. It has a tropical climate with the characteristics of the reserve. The flora is made up of 889 plant organisms, with 11% endemism. The fauna is highly endemic in particular groups, such as mollusks, which can reach 40%. Amphibians and reptiles exceed 80%. The Sierra del Rosario has several plant formations: evergreen forests, semideciduous, pine forests, quabales, complex of mogotes and secondary vegetation. Of the fauna, the most studied groups are amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Ninety species of mollusks, 16 species of amphibians, 33 species of reptiles, and 117 species of birds have been reported.

Itinerary

• Welcome cocktail with brief explanation of the project.
• Ascent to the El Taburete hill at 452 m above sea level.
• Enjoy the San Juan River Baths. (Picnic lunch depending on the modality chosen).
• Transfer from San Juan parking lot to Rancho Curujey.
