ISLAS UROS, AMANTANI AND TAQUILE OVERNIGHT TOUR

The floating islands of the Uros are a group of artificial islands that are inhabited and built from Totora, an aquatic plant that grows on the surface of Lake Titicaca. The islands are raised on a portion of the surface of Lake Titicaca, blocks of Totora roots are woven on which successive layers of Totora are laid out woven or interwoven in the form of mats. The Uros are its inhabitants, an ancestral people who are currently concentrated in Peru on the floating islands located in the bay of Puno. Their subsistence is based on the ancestral culture linked to Lake Titicaca, based on the multiple uses given to the Totora that springs from the bottom and fishing.

The island of Taquile (Intika in Quechua), in Lake Titicaca, is located 45 km from Amantani the regional capital. It has a population of about 2,200 inhabitants. The main village is located at 3,950 meters above sea level and the highest point of the island reaches 4,050 meters above sea level.

The island of Amantani, in the district of the same name in the region of Puno, Peru, is located in Lake Titicaca. It is almost circular in shape with an average diameter of 3.4 km. It reaches an area of 9.28 km², being the largest island in the Peruvian part of the lake. Its maximum height, at the top of Mount Llacastiti is 4150 m above sea level, that is, 320 m above the level of the lake (3810 m). The population is approximately 400 families, distributed in the 10 communities of Santa Rosa, Lampayuni, Sancayuni, Alto Sancayuni, Occosuyo, Occo Pampa , Incatiana, Colquecachi and Villa Orinojón1 plus the town. Their main means of subsistence is the agricultural activity; they produce potatoes, geese, barley and beans; in the cattle activity the bovines and bovine excels. Their textile activity is similar to that of Taquile, both in variety and design. Due to the existence of granitic rock in the Llacastiti hill a cut and carving activity of utensils for the daily use and for decorative elements in the construction has been developed. The occupation of the island dates back to the pre-Incan era.
