Santa Clara is the capital of the province of Villa Clara, located in the central region of the country. It has a total geographic area of 513.7 km², its population is 239,091 inhabitants, of which 92.3% is urban. It is an important industrial, commercial, service and communication center located in a vital node of roads and railroads. It also has an international airport. It was founded on July 15, 1689 and became a city in 1867. It was taken militarily by Commander Ernesto "Che" Guevara in December 1958 during the final stage of the revolutionary struggle led by Fidel Castro against Fulgencio Batista and Zaldívar. In the Plaza de la Revolución is the sculptural group raised by the sculptor José Delarra, dedicated to Ernesto Guevara de la Serna (Che). At its base there is a Mausoleum, where the remains of a renowned hero have rested since 1997.
The Villa of San Juan of the Remedies, is located in the province of Villa Clara, in the center of the Island, is recognized as the eighth oldest city of Cuba and is possessor of a rich historical and cultural path for what March 7, 1980, his historical urban center was declared National Monument. Remedios, as it is popularly called nowadays, has a surface area of 559.6 km² and a population of approximately 48 966 inhabitants with a population density of 83.0 inhabitants/km2, where the traces of 17th century Spanish architecture can still be found intact. It was founded in 1578. In 1545 the village already had a town hall and continued to grow over time until in 1843 the growing population was given the title of City.
