GAVIOTA CABO SAN ANTONIO Villa ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Villa Gaviota Cabo San Antonio is located in Las Tumbas beach, Guanahacabibes Peninsula, in Sandino municipality, Pinar del Río province. In 1987 the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) granted the Guanahacabibes Peninsula the honorary category of Biosphere Reserve. On December 14, 2001, the Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers approved the creation of the Guanahacabibes National Park with a total area of 39,830 hectares, which constitutes the core of the Guanahacabibes Peninsula Biosphere Reserve, with a land area of 23,880 hectares and a marine area of 15,950 hectares. The terrestrial part has three core areas, which are defined as Cabo Corrientes, El Veral and Cabo de San Antonio, and a narrow strip of coastline. The marine area covers the southern portion of the reserve, extending from Jaimanitas, east of Cabo Corrientes, to Cabo San Antonio.

Among the abundant archeological sites that exist in the National Park and in the buffer zone, of particular interest are the colonial residuary located next to the Roncali Lighthouse, near Las Tumbas beach; Cueva del Francés, for the aboriginal pictographs found at the site; Cueva de los Musulmanes, for containing some Paleolithic artifacts; and Cueva Bolondrón and Caleta del Resguardo, for presenting some aboriginal agro-pottery evidence. It is known that after the arrival of the colonizers, there was little settlement so the area was a nest of pirates, corsairs and buccaneers, of which have come to our days, legends of treasures buried in caves and mountains, as well as sinister murders. The very name of Las Tumbas, in one of its versions, indicates that it comes from the existence of tombs of victims of internal struggles for the possession of pirate riches. Although it is necessary to indicate that another version indicates that the Tombs, are open spaces in the vegetation with the objective of gaining free space for the sowing, the cattle raising and the construction of houses.
